Government Responds to Windsor Bridge Safety ConcernsLast modified: July 1, 2008 - 11:11 AM
The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Bart Bassett said that he was very pleased that the State Government had reacted so swiftly in responding to representations made by Council regarding the safety of the Windsor Bridge. The Mayor was referring to the announcement on Tuesday 17 June 2008 by the Minister for Roads, Eric Roozendaal that the State Government will spend over $25 million dollars on replacing the Windsor Bridge across the Hawkesbury River. "There has been concern from within the community as well as Council, and in particular Councillor Porter, about traffic flows across the Windsor Bridge especially regarding the dangers of larger vehicles passing each other safely. Further concerns have also been raised particularly about the western approach to the bridge which is very difficult for large vehicles to negotiate." said Councillor Bassett. "The Windsor Bridge has served our community well but at over 130 years of age it is no longer economically viable to maintain and improve the existing bridge. With increasingly heavy use the condition of the bridge was fast deteriorating" added the Mayor. The Mayor advised that he had made representations earlier in the year through local Members of Parliament regarding these issues and said he had been heartened by the quick response. "I understand that the Roads and Traffic Authority have begun work on the design process and once design concepts have been finalised a consultation process will be carried out to allow the public to have input into this major infrastructure project" he explained.
It seems we will not have to wait too long for our new bridge as the Minister for Roads has advised that tenders are expected to be called in 2009 with construction work to commence before the end of next year. Contact details |
