Winner of Gallipoli Art Prize on show at Hawkesbury Regional GalleryThe portrait, Max Carment, War Veteran (the last portrait), has taken out the 2008 Gallipoli Art Prize. His son and the artist of the painting, Tom Carment, said that he was very touched that the judges chose his "small and rather scruffy work for this prize," as he accepted the honour (as quoted in the SMH recently).
"I've depicted a man who has been very scarred by his war experience." Carment said his father Max, who died recently, was captured during the fall of Singapore in World War II and held in Changi prison. The $15,000 prize is awarded by the Gallipoli Memorial Club, a group formed by returned soldiers and their families.
