Background

Numerous researchers were using the library facilities and the group was set up following a meeting in the Library. The Hawkesbury Family History Group is basically a support & information group for family historians & is co-ordinated by the Hawkesbury City Council Library Service.

Guest speakers feature at each meeting, talking on a variety of topics, relating to both family history & local history. Over the years there have been some extremely informative speakers talking on various subjects relating to family history. "Show & Tell" is held once a year (usually in December) & members are invited to bring along items of historical interest to show. There have been some wonderful treasures presented. Attendance at meetings range from about 20 to 45, with some people travelling from Sydney each month and visitors from interstate.

The Hawkesbury Family History Group regularly donates research tools and publications to the Hawkesbury City Council Library's Local Studies Collection. Items such as Births, Deaths & Marriage Indexes, books on various topics, CD-ROMs, microfilm & fiche.

A small number of volunteers from the Group have assisted the Local Studies Librarian over the years with filing, indexing, newspaper clippings, data entry, research & photocopying.

Aims & Objectives

The Hawkesbury Family History Group was established by the Hawkesbury City Council Library in 1982 to support family and local historians researching in the Hawkesbury district.

The aims of the Hawkesbury Family History Group are to:

  • raise funds to purchase resources for the Local Studies Collection
  • assist with transcribing headstones
  • assist with indexing projects including births, deaths & marriages
